FTI SB Ford Melonized Distributor Gear - 531
This is a precision machined, melonized distributor gear for the small block Ford engines using billet steel roller camshafts. These melonized distributor gears feature a modern heat treating and manufacturing process that makes them compatible with all steel camshaft cores made of either induction hardened or carburized steel.
Neither of these materials is compatible with the stock cast iron distributor gears. In the past, bronze distributor gears were used, but for street applications, the bronze gears wear at an excessive rate and have to be replaced on a regular basis.
Melonized distributor gears are designed to provide better wear resistance and compatibility with certain camshaft materials, particularly hydraulic roller cams. They are often preferred over standard cast iron gears for their durability and performance in high stress applications.
FTI now offers a melonized distributor gear that provides an OEM style lifespan without damaging the cam.
